Getting a customer is not easy.

Getting a visitor to decide that he or she wants to buy the product or service you’re offering, getting out their credit card and giving you their hard-earned money is not a piece of cake.

Most visitor’s to your Internet site, 97 – 99% of them if you’re lucky, will not buy your product. They turn away from your site, your offer…and they will probably never return. In other words – if you work hard, if you use the right techniques and if you’re talented maybe you’ll get 1 – 3 % of the people who visit your site to buy. But it’s not easy.

First you need to make sure you actually get enough visitors to your site. And if you use paid advertising, like pay-per-click search engines – this will cost you money. If you plan on getting visitors for free, this will take you time.

You need to make sure that your visitor is persuaded to buy. And if he or she won’t buy the very first time they visit your site, you need to get them to come back again later.

Getting a customer – a “first-time” customer – takes a bit of effort.

His friend Neal runs a site, too. He gets 100 visitors a day and sells a product that costs $ 100 and manages to sell to 1% of his customers. 30 new customers a month; 360 customers a year. What a coincidence, right? Anyway, Neal has got a really nice product. A product people love. He also offers great customer service. Neal’s customers like him very much.

They wouldn’t mind buying from him again.

After his first 12 months online, Neal sends all his 360 customers an email offering a second product. A so-called back-end product.

This doesn’t take him long. After all, it’s just ONE email.

The second product is a little more expensive, it costs $ 300, but it is a product that his customers really need. A product they want. (He knows this because he asked them in a survey what product they would be interested in; what products they really needed.)

Since Neal is a great guy offering great products and excellent customer service, as many 30 % of his customers buy the second product. That’s 108 people.

Now here’s the interesting bit. The second product costs $ 300, which means that Neal has an additional yearly income of $ 32,400!

Look at the figures! Neal has doubled his yearly income just by selling a second product to 30 % of his customers. He hasn’t had to go to great lengths to get new customers, but he’s using his existing customers to double his profits!

John makes $ 30,000 a year, Neal makes $ 62,400.

And the one and only difference is that Neal sends out one extra email!

Neal still only gets 100 visitors a day. He still only gets 1% of them to buy his first product, but he offers them all a second, back-end product. He maximizes the profit potential of his customer base.

Strategies like “back-end offers” and concepts like “lifetime value” shifts the focus from the short sighted “take the money and run” strategy that is so much in use on the internet today. You’ve seen these sites all over. They only focus on getting a massive amount of traffic and then selling visitors an overpriced product that doesn’t deliver what is promised.

Customers feel fooled. Why would they ever want to buy from this salesman again?

The more successful sites focus on building a strong relationship with their customers. And your main goal shouldn’t be to make sure your customers are satisfied…you want them to be extremely satisfied. If you deliver the goods, your customers will trust you more. And if you have their trust, you can sell them anything.

Hexadecimal Color Notation on the Web

When designing elements for your webpage, you will often be called upon to specify a color. For example, the code for a span shown below specifies that the color of the text within the span will be yellow.


Colors can be specified according to their names, for example “yellow”, “green”, or “blue”. In many cases, these simple color names will work. But what if you want to specify a more sophisticated color like “cornflowerblue”? A particular browser may not recognize a particular color name. It’s more reliable to specify colors with an “RGB triplet”.

An RGB triplet specifies a color based upon the amounts of red, green, and blue, on a scale from 0 to 255, required to create the color. For example, to create the color cornflowerblue you need red=100, green=149, and blue=237. We could then specify the color of the text within a span using the rgb function as shown below.


This will work fine with style notation, but what if you want to use straight html. Html doesn’t recognize the rgb function. In that case, you can specify color using “hexadecimal” notation. Whereas the decimal numbering system uses the characters 0 through 9 to get 10 values, the hexadecimal numbering system uses the characters 0 through f to get 16 values. (After 9 the characters a, b, c, d, e and f are used, as shown below.)

On first appearance, this looks pretty simple but you need two hexadecimal characters to represent all decimal values from 0 to 255. When you increment decimal 9 by 1, you change the 9 to 0 and put 1 in the ten’s place. When you increment hexidecimal F by one, you change the F to 0 and put 1 in the “sixteens” place. Sometimes it’s not easy to convert between decimal and hexadecimal in your head.

We could then specify the color of text within a span using the hexadecimal notation as shown below.


Note that when we indicate the use of hexadecimal notation by placing a pound (#) sign in front of the number, and we don’t use commas to separate the color components.

If it’s not easy to convert between decimal and hexadecimal in your head, then how do you do it? You can use a calculator that has a decimal to hexadecimal coversion function, or you can learn to think in hexadecimal. For example, what’s the next number after CE? That would be CF. what’s the next number after CF? That would be D0. Which hexadecimal number is higher 99 or B2? B2 would be higher than 99. It gets easier with experience.

.htaccess to Mask Errors on Your Website

The .htaccess file is a control file located in your webservers directory. This file is a very powerful file that can control access to certain files, restrict access to files, forward people in the event of errors, and many more useful features for webmasters!

One of the most embarrassing things for a webmaster is to have a website with dead links, bad URLs, and error messages when the user surfs through your website. Using the .htaccess file you can help reduce how noticeable those errors are by quickly moving the user to a correct working location. This method of course doesn’t correct the underlying problem with your website, however it does help to keep your website looking more professional.

Common error codes that you want to try to hide from the user:

400 – Bad Request
401 – Authorization Required
403 – Forbidden
404 – Page Not Found
500 – Internal Server Error
501 – Not Implemented

The biggest and most common error by far is the 404 Error (Page not found), but all of these can be embarrassing and troublesome to webmasters. If an error occurs on your website you don’t want to lose that user. You may not be able to provide them with a link to the page they wanted, but you might get another chance if you redirect them to another page within your website.

In the second example, should a user request a page that no longer exists on your website, they will automatically have the index.php file loaded. This can be done for all of the error codes listed above and will help to hide and glaring mistakes in your website.

As I mentioned before, this is not a fix action for your website, but simply a mask. It’s very important to review your website logs and look for error codes. The goal is to have a good working website afterall!

Password Safety

If you’ve been on the internet for any length of time, you’ve collected about a zillion accounts and their associated passwords. Personally, I have over 500 different active accounts all over the web and probably a thousand more inactive or unused accounts.

Most people don’t have anywhere near that number, but I’ll bet you have at least a couple of dozen. Let’s see, you’ve probably got an account at your bank’s website, a few credit cards, egroups, perhaps a few webrings, your ISP, email, hotmail, perhaps AOL, and a few others that you don’t use as often.

If you are like most people, you cannot even come close to remembering it all. In fact, a lot of people simply create the same account name and password everywhere … and that’s extremely dangerous.

Let’s say a hacker figures out your AOL account and password. If every other account that you own has the same username and password … well, you get the idea. Now all he has to do is figure out where you have accounts … but he could just try it at a number of say, banking sites or credit card sites, and perhaps he will get lucky. You may make it even easier for him by mentioning your sites in your AOL emails or on your web site.

So how do you protect yourself? First, make sure your passwords are all different. Don’t use the same password on all of your accounts … and try and use a few different usernames if you can.

Next, be sure and choose some password that are not so easy to guess. Avoid names (husband, wife, kids, cats and so on), social security and phone numbers, addresses and anything else that someone could figure out if they knew anything about you.

Also avoid some common words. Did you know that the most common password is simply “password”. “God” is also common, especially amoung system managers. Avoid common words such as these.

All right! Now you’ve got all of your 30 or so accounts set up with different account names and different difficult-to-guess passwords. How are you going to remember them all?

Rule number one is be prepared for disaster. Write down all of your usernames and passwords in a notebook (yes, on paper). No, really. You need to do this because computers sometimes die, and when they do it’s at the worst possible time. You may not even have a backup, and if you loose all of your passwords you could lose a lot.

Keep this notebook safe, perhaps locked in a drawer. It’s probably a good idea to keep a copy in your safe deposit box – so someone can get to your accounts after you die, perhaps, or if you are in the hospital or something else happens.

Now keep a computer record also, which you will maintain more up-to-date. I like using a program called Password Tracker, although you could just as easily use Excel or even notepad. The idea is to record all of your account information as you create or change it. Password Tracker is great because it also gives you tools to enter the data for you.

Another good product is Gator (I use both Password Tracker and Gator) which can fill in forms and automatically log in accounts as you surf to them.

Be sure and keep backups of the Gator and Password Tracker databases … believe me, you don’t want to lose this information if you can avoid it.

By the way, I’ve learned to avoid the automatic account and password features of Internet Explorer. Why? Because there is no way to save, print out or get to the information. Thus, if the computer dies I lose my passwords with no way to recover. I don’t use Netscape much, but I would guess the same thing applies.

To conclude, use different account names and passwords for your various web sites. Record them on paper and store that somewhere safe. In addition, you can use programs link Excel, Gator and Password Tracker to save all of this information for you. Finally, and very importantly, be very prepared for disaster.
